After so many points you will advance to another level. The ship will then change to a bigger ship and the speed of the litter moving through the water will increase making the game harder as you advance through it. To show that its changed level, the background will change and a new ship will come in.
Ship Research
Something like this will be used for the very first boat. Because as its a wooden boat and not very big this indicates its not going to be to difficult. Also it because of its size could indicate the amount of litter that falls into the sea.
Something similar to this will be used for the next level. Again its slightly bigger than the last suggesting that it will be a little harder and the amount of litter falling in will be greater.
Now things are getting quite a bit bigger, so now the litter is going to fall quite quickly because this boat is a lot bigger in size.
This will be the final ship in the game because its probably one of the biggest ships around.
Litter used
What Client Wanted
The client wanted the game to be fun and more inportantly, to put a message forward to younger people about pollution etc. She spoke about useing all the different reefs used in the arquariuim and useing all the different types of fishes. Also useing the popular fishes and animals such as the turtle.
So we came with the idea of placing are game in a harbor where boats will pull up on the side of the screen and start throwing litter off its ship (going with the pollution idea). The player is in control of net and has to catch each piece of rubbish as its thrown into the air, if the player catches a certain amount of litter the player will then move up a level. You can see this because the ship will disapear and the a new and bigger one will appear, then the rate of litter will increase, also the time of day changes. If the player misses litter it will fall into the sea and you will loose a life.
Clients Response
The client really liked this idea, but thought we should try to make it look like the harbor was more like plymouth sound and the local area, so I added in a lighthouse thats similar to the one at the harbor.
Facts to be used in game
80% of all marine pollution comes from land based activities.
Rubbish that is discarded at sea ofton ends up on the beach.
11% is natural resources.
24% from all forms of transport.
significant oil pollution is caused by tankers illegally cleaning there tanks out at sea and dumping the waste overboard.
The effects of oil pollution on wildlife can be terrible. between january 1971 and june 1979 36,000 birds were found dead around the british coast as a result of oiling.
statics reveal that approximately 80% of ocean pollution are land based, or by humans.
Doesnt just effect marine life, but effects the rest of the planet indirectly.
Boats discard more than 400,000 tons of garbage every year.
Time Plan
Week 1- Go and visit the client, write down notes on what they would like to see in the game.
Week 2 - Take photographs of the argquarium to get inspiration and begin researching.
Week 3 - Start mind mapping and putting ideas down, doing sketches etc.
Week 4 - start scripting, doing demos, drawing all the backgrounds and objects.
Week 5 - starting to put everything together, importing all the graphics and making the game look right.
Week 6 - making sure everything is working, checking for bugs etc before the client views it.
Drawing
This is the background I have drawn to be used in the final game. What will happen is, a small ship will appear on the left and start to throw rubbish off the ship the player will have a net and will have to catch the rubbish to stop it falling into the sea and polluting it. If you miss ten pieces of rubbish it will then be game over. When enough objects are caught, you will the move on to the next level, you can tell when this happens because a bigger boat will come in and the rate of the thrown objects will be quicker, also the time of day will change.
Evaluation
What went well - I think are game looked really good in the end, it looked just like some of the games people play on the internet which is really good I think. Also I think the graphics look really nice and work with the image. The boats look really nice and the way the litter works is really nice, I think how the ship changes and the time of day is really cool.
What Could've Been improved - I think if was to do this again I would try to put abit more details in, maybe have a few seagulls flying around, or have a few more fishes swimming about. I think a cool thing we couldve added, is when objects fall in the water after a certain amount the fish start to diem or seaweed turns different colour, or maybe just a huge build up of rubbish starts to appear. Or maybe having the water constantly rippling, and the boat moving with the ripples.
What I did to help - My role in this task was to do all of the graphics and drawing, apart from the boats which Ryan did. So first of all, once we had a rough idea, I drew the image ubove because thats what came into my head after hearing the ideas, and the team really liked the way it looked. I decided to outline everything with a black line because I thought it would make everything look more cartoony and make everything stand out more. I wanted to make quite a lot of the water visable because if the player missed an object I wanted the player to be able to see it fall through the water, but I left enough sky so the player could see it flying throuh the air.
Overall - Overall I think are game went realy well, I think we had a pretty stong idea that worked, also it looked like an internet game. I would say that me and salina were probably the people that put the most work into the game, more so salina than anyone because she spent a lot of time getting the coding right. But ryan was away due to an operation so there wasnt anything that could be done. Considering that he was away I think me and salina did a pretty decent job.
